Portland (WGME) - When it gets heated, it can be quite dangerous, and it can cause heat exhaustion, vs, heatstroke.

Here's what the CDC says:

  • For heat exhaustion, the sufferer may feel unconscious or dizzy and may experience excessive sweating.
  • The skin will be calm, yellow and sticky.
  • The pulse will be sharp but weak.
  • Some muscles will also have cramps.

You will need to work to make the victim cool quickly with air conditioning. Wash water sits and cold wet clothes.

If this heat worsens by stroke, then it is a step with a worse headache, but there is no sweat because the body fails to cool itself.

The skin will be warm and dry, and the pulse will be strong.

The sufferer can lose consciousness.

If you experience these symptoms, then this is an emergency.

Call 911.

While waiting for an ambulance, take the victim in air conditioning.

If the heat index is in the upper 90s or higher, the fans are less effective.

In heatstroke, body temperature can be above 106 degrees in minutes.

CDC experts say that does not water the victim at this point. They may be at risk of vomiting.

If untreated, death or permanent disability can be caused by heatstroke.
